Our homemade apple butter is sweet, heartily spiced, perfect for any time of year
The crafting of apple butter originated in the middle ages as a way to preserve the apple harvest indefinitely. In those days, many European villages had apple orchards, and apple butter was a common food. Apple butter contains no real butter, but is called a "butter" because of it's rich, creamy texture which is the result of slowly cooking down the apples resulting in a spread which is as timeless and delicious as anything you've ever spread on a morning piece of toast, muffin or bagel.
This tradition of making apple butter was also very common among the colonists in the early days of America, and it seems Americans have taken an age old liking to apple butter as it is as popular today as ever.
Many folks associate apple butter with the Fall and cool weather, and sales soar at this time of year, but the truth is apple butter is a treat available year round. In addition to a breakfast staple, it is also great with cottage cheese or as an ice cream or cake topping, as a meat marinade or paired with your favorite cheese, or a healthy alternative to those heavy butters and fats.
